The 50,000th property to be protected by SmartWater in Nottingham City took place during the Basford Week of Action (26/01/10)

To mark this 50,000 milestone, the home of Heathfield resident, Kerry Quigley was SmartWatered by Councillor Mick Newton, Alan Given Chief Executive of the Crime and Drugs Partnership and Antony Slater- Davison from Nottingham City Homes also in attendance were local and regional media.

SmartWater was first introduced into Nottingham homes in 2001, since 2006 as part of the Week of Action programme the number of homes protected with SmartWater has risen dramatically with the ambitious target of protecting a thousand homes during each Week of Action.

SmartWater is a clear fluid that contains a unique DNA type code; it is invisible to the naked eye but is detectable by the Police using special lamps. Thieves fear SmartWater as it makes stolen goods traceable and has been proven to deter criminals from targeting properties. If a householder moves after their property has been SmartWatered they can simply re-register their unique SmartWater identification code along with their new post-code meaning property is protected for life!

Nottinghamshire Police routinely test for the presence of SmartWater at custody suites, portable UV lamps are also used in the detection of Stolen Property.

In addition to delivering the SmartWater service, the Burglary Reduction Team routinely offer advice and information to home owners on how they can prevent themselves from falling victim to burglars and other property crime. SmartWater is FREE to city residents. To arrange for your property to be protected simply call 0115 915 3701, or book online by clicking here.

Kerry Quigley said:

“I’ve been enlightened today on some of the things that I didn’t know could be SmartWatered, Jewellery for instance. I just thought it was electrical goods and hand held things. I’d like to think that burglars if they do see the SmartWater sticker in the window, that they’ll think twice and not be bothering that particular house."

Alan Given CDP Chief Executive said:

“Over the years the uptake of SmartWater by the residents of the city has been excellent and the personal recommendations of family, friends and neighbours have ensured there is constant demand for SmartWater. Making sure all these requests have been met has been down to the efforts of all the CDP partners in providing volunteers who undergo the necessary training and then deliver the SmartWater into communities.

As well as the efforts of the Burglary Reduction Team, local tenant and residents groups, neighbourhood watch and local neighbourhood teams have been integral to this 50,000 milestone being reached.

Burglary continues to fall in the city and the ever expanding SmartWater footprint that stretches across the city has been pivotal in the huge reductions in burglary, we will continue to work with local people to ensure these reductions continue."
