Students Welcome Weekend
Teams of volunteers will be out helping to welcome over 60,000 students to Nottingham by giving out safety and anti-crime advice, while tackling head on the misconceptions of Nottingham.
Members of Nottingham City Burglary Reduction Team, Neighbourhood Police and staff from both Universities will be hitting the streets over the next two weekends, to greet students arriving in Nottingham.
Over 60,000 new and returning students will be coming back to the City’s two Universities and the Burglary Reduction Team be working with both universities to provide crime prevention advice. The team spoke to over 20,000 students in 2008 and aims to beat that figure this year.
The result of this has been significant reduction in crime against students (-45% compared to 2003/04) and long lasting partnerships between the Nottingham Crime & Drugs Partnership, Nottinghamshire Police, students unions and both Universities have been developed.
The volunteers will be speaking to Nottingham University students on September 19th and 20th, and Nottingham Trent University students on the October 2nd and 3rd. They will form a visible presence in student areas between 10am and 3:30pm on these four days talking to students and parents, handing out safety advice and tips on enjoying Nottingham, as well as maps of Nottingham and other goodies for www.easily-done.co.uk, a website which targets students with simple, common sense anti-crime advice.
Students will get advice such as:

"The Welcome Weekend events provide us with ideal opportunities to both welcome students to our city and remind them of some basic crime prevention advice. Many first year students will be living away from their family home for the first time and may take aspects of home security and personal safety for granted; both universities in partnership with the Police and Crime and Drugs Partnership have put a variety of crime reduction initiatives in place to ensure their stay in Nottingham is a safe one."
