Hepatitis B, C and HIV infection information

Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver. It can be caused by a virus that can attack the liver. There are a number of different types of viral heptatits including A, B & C.
Hepatitis B
Hepatitis B is passed by an infected body fluid (including blood) and can be passed on by:- Sex without a condom
- Sharing any drug taking kit
- Mother to baby during birth
- Tattooing and body piercing with un-sterile equipment
- Sharing toothbrushes, razors and hair clippers
- Get vaccinated (you need to be vaccinated at least 3 times to be protected
- Use condoms or other contraception
- Don't share any drug taking kit
- Ensure sterile equipment is used for tattooing and piercing
- Don't share toothbrushes, razors or clippers
Hepatitis C
Hepatitis C is more common amongst drug users, and is passed on by infected blood.It can be trasmitted through:
- Sharing ANY drug taking kit
- Mother to baby during birth
- Tattooing and body piercing with un-sterile equipment
- Sharing toothbrushes, razors and hair clippers
- During sex if blood is present
- There is currently no vaccine available
- Don't share any drug taking kit
- Ensure sterile equipment is used for tattooing or piercing
- Don't share toothbrushes, razors or hair clippers
- Use condoms or other contraception during sex
HIV
HIV (Human Immune Deficiency Virus) is a viral infection, which can affect the body's immune system and its ability to fight infection. Over time this could lead to a condition called AIDS.How do I catch it?
- Sex without a condom
- Sharing any drug taking kit
- Tattooing and body piercing with un-sterile kit
- Sharing toothbrushes, razors and hair clippers
- There is currently no vaccine available to prevent you from catching this virus
- Always use condoms or other contraceptives and follow the safety advice for the other viruses
