Lord Stevens Commentary: "The truth about crime in Nottingham".
The much anticipated release of Lord Stevens report on crime in Nottingham took place at the Nottingham Crime & Drugs Partnership National Conference which took place on Tuesday and Wednesday (24th-25th September 2007).
Bill Taylor CBE QPM former City of London Commissioner and co-author of the report presented the findings during a special conference session.
The aim of the report is to provide a commentary of the issues facing Nottingham City in relation to crime and criminals, and to provide an assessment on how the City is meeting these challenges and to review progress.
The report looks at the following key areas, which Lord Stevens considers to be the building blocks of improving performance.
- Crime prevention.
- Creating an attrition rate for offenders.
- Asset seizure.
- Partnership between agencies and organisations.
- Leadership.
- Managing perceptions.
- Prolific offenders.
- Organised criminality.
- Specialist skills.
- Exploitation of technology.
´The progress made in Nottingham over the last two years to tackle crime and its associated problems is impressive. I am very proud to have been associated with the contribution made by One Nottingham and its partnerships in this process.
To ensure that the great progress made to date is sustained it was important to seek the view of an independent outside authority to give an unequivocal narrative on how the partnerships are tackling crime in Nottingham and to identify future opportunities to improve partnership and performance further.
I am greatly encouraged by Lord Stevens findings, however, our work continues and we aim to reduce crime still further through our program of ´Early Intervention Package´ and effective partnership working. I am confident that the progress made in Nottingham City will be sustained over the coming years.´
