Auto Crime

The Crime & Drugs Partnership is committed to reducing Auto Crime across the City.

What is Auto Crime?

Auto Crime includes Vehicle Interference, Theft from Motor Vehicle, and Theft of Motor Vehicle.

Auto Crime does NOT include parking offences, such as, tickets or speeding fines.

Our target to reduce Auto Crime is a reduction of 17%, which we aim to achieve by March 2009.

Our current performance as of July 2008 (official Police data):
  • Auto Crime DOWN 5.36%
  • How do we achieve these reductions?

The Partnership currently runs a 6-weekly themed group, which is attended by all relevant partner agencies, which include voluntary sector, statutory partners, and non-statutory partners.

We also deploy Capture Vehicles across the City, which have Smartwater installed in them as a deterrant to offending. The Smartwarter is used as evidence and helps in the conviction of offenders.

Patrol officers, involved in the Neighbourhood Policing Teams, proactively look at vehicles for items on display and will contact the registered keeper by letter informing them of crime redcution measures they can take to secure their vehicle.

What can you do to help reduce auto crime?

You can reduce your chances of becoming a victim of auto crime by taking these simple steps:
    • Ensure that you remove items out of sight within the vehicle
    • Remove Sat Nav equipment (including bracket) out of sight when you are away from the vehicle and also wipe the windscreen to remove the 'sucker' mark
    • Ensure the vehicle is locked when you're not in it.
    • Try and use a Safer Car Park
    • If parking on street, ensure the area is well-lit, and as populated as possible.
    • Don't be a victim of opportunity - Keep things out of sight
